THE STORY.

His "what-if?" became a reality. Now he's an imposter in another world.
After finding himself in a timeline where his dead father is still alive, Logan accidentally displaces his double and struggles to keep the lie together, as he learns that nostalgia’s sweetest dream can be its cruelest trap.
OUT OF TIME is a character-driven psychological drama about nostalgia, grief, and obsession. It follows a young, rebellious man named Logan who invents his own time machine -- and travels to parallel timeline, where he encounters his long-passed father Neil, his doppelganger, and their lifelong best friend Sabrina.
The film explores the dark side of nostalgia, the consequences of dwelling over the card you were dealt -- and the lengths one is willing to hurt themselves to achieve an unknowable life. The setting and characters of this parallel world flow throughout Logan's psyche, as the story explores the deep avenues of his mind through the experiences of our cast of character -- inspired by Carl Jung's analytical psychology.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT.

Beneath the dreamy visuals and sci-fi elements -- Out of Time, at its core, is a film about the harm of dwelling of the past. Logan is a man corrupted by the concept of "what-if", the idea that things could've been different, that his life would be infinitely better had the universe dealt him the right cards, or if he returned to a time much simpler. This is a thought that strikes a cord with our generation -- a raw sense of dread that we only have one life to live and that our past, especially our childhood, is over. Many of us desire to retreat into our past, into the nostalgia of a time when we felt we had the whole world at our fingertips -- not burdened by the hardships of adulthood and the guilt of our mistakes.
Out of Time is a deeply personal film for me. When I was in early production on the screenplay, I knew from the get-go that my one desire was to create a film that illustrated the way that you can falter to nostalgia when deeply depressed and isolated. Becoming overly attached to the joyous elements of your childhood, and dwelling on the things that weigh on you as an adult -- is a mindset that our generation, including myself, is easily susceptible to -- to the point that it begins to effect our daily life, our outlook on the future, and our motivation and drive to better oneself.
It grew from my very first film project -- an award-winning short film by the name of Timeless, following a man named Logan as he documents his last time-jump on a quest to bring his father back. It caused me to fall in love with filmmaking, and Out of Time rounds out this concept after five years. The film serves as a reflection on my painful experiences with nostalgia and depression -- offering a more cynical perspective on the common science fiction idea that we could just go back and change our past: what harm would this truly bring? The film visualizes this struggle through manifestations of our main character's psyche, a story that pits the parts of him that want to repress and run away, against the ones that want the grow and move on. It's about the harm that we can do to not only ourselves, but to the others around us, if we take our obsession with nostalgia too far -- and the truth that changing our past is not, and will never be a reality.
THE AUDIOVISUAL.

A pivotal element to the storytelling of Out of Time is how the movie makes you feel. In order to be immersed with Logan, entranced into this psychological reality -- the visuals and audio must do a lot of the heavy lifting.
Cinematography, Sound Design, & Music:
The film will feature a non-clinical anamorphic look, coinciding with vibrant, surreal lighting and trippy practical effects inspired by Chayse Irvin's work on the film Hurry Up Tomorrow. This renders Logan's new parallel world distorted, yet familiar -- like being dropped into the middle of someone else's dream, in a very Lynchian manner. Our film will be accompanied by an electronic and haunting score, inspired by the music of TRON: Legacy and TRON: Ares, and meticulously-crafted sound design to make our time-travel elements both unnerving and beautiful, at the same time.

Costume Design:
Out of Time features a few intricately detailed pieces of character design, notably Logan's time-travel suit -- a hodge-podge of snow wear, heavy tattered clothing, and mechanical parts. Inspired by designs such as The Batman's drifter outfit and A View to a Kill's white bogner ski suit, Logan's outfit feels heavily worn and in-line with his scrappy, guerilla style of creating.
Alongside his suit, an pivotal piece of production design for the film is the time machine itself -- a Frankenstein'd collection of old technology, housed inside a banged-up school backpack. Cables run out of the top, down the arm of the wearer, to a makeshift watch that ignites the machine. The time machine is incredibly important to the film, both in design and in the story, almost serving as a character itself -- a haunting manifestation of nostalgia, itself, that calls to the desperate with a siren's song.
Set Design:
Logan's childhood home, a sanctuary of his past and unhealed emotions -- which is intricately detailed and warm, and represents the "simpler times" Logan craves. There is a comforting sense of familiarity here, but lining the walls are distorted perceptions of what Logan remembers. Posters he never had, trophies he never won, the lamp that he broke when he was 10. It is here that Logan rediscovers his father, a man who he hasn't seen in 12 years. It is here where Logan commits to his lie, rejecting his path of growth and embracing the life he never had.
The towering isles of memories that Logan and Sabrina embark through -- a moody recycling center on the other side of town, where the two begin to bond. Lining the isles of the center is miscellaneous electronics, "junk" as Sabrina calls it, whilst Logan finds them as a collection of forgotten or discarded memories. It is in this location that a complex dynamic festers here between Sabrina and Logan, someone who shares the same face as her lifelong friend, but one comes from a different past -- a truth she wrestles with, as she can't help but find herself drawn to him.
A location we call the "Time Void", our manifestation of the space between time, the path that time-travelers cross to journey to other worlds. A snowy tundra representing the character's own entropy, like an uncanny infinite emptiness. Here we witness a conversation of the mind, where Logan and his double face what they've been running away from and repressing.
